There are four Afro-German MPs in the new Bundestag / Photo: Karamba Diaby Dr Karamba Diaby, the Senegalese-born member of the SPD and the only member of the 19th Bundestag with African heritage (right), with the president of the parliament, Dr Wolfgang Schäuble, at its inaugural sitting on 24 October 2017. It’s his third victory at a federal parliamentary election. Top of the list is Dr Karamba Diaby who won a direct mandate in the eastern constituency of Halle (state of Saxony-Anhalt) on the platform of the SPD. Sylvie Nantcha, Chairperson of The African Network of Germany, wrote excitedly in a social media post.

History is being made here! Germany is a country of diversity and opportunity! Diversity in politics! Diversity in the Bundestag! Our society is diverse! Our Bundestag is becoming more diverse! We are very happy about that!” Dr. “Four Afro-Germans in the Bundestag! Their parents come from Senegal, Morocco, Cameroon and Eritrea. Three of the Afro-German politicians won direct mandates, which means they won the highest number of votes cast in their constituencies.

For the first time, there are four Afro-German members in the Bundestag, as well as more women, younger people and people with a migration background. The new German federal parliament is more diverse than ever.
